What Is Firewood?
The most simple definition of Firewood is;
Firewood is a wooden material that is gathered and used as a source of fuel. Commonly, it is not highly processed wood and comes in a standard log or branch form. Besides the natural types of firewood previously mentioned you can also purchase this type of wood fuel in pellet or chip form. The two most common types of Firewood are Seasoned (Dry) or Unseasoned (Fresh/Wet). Generally speaking, Firewood is classified as hardwood or softwood.
What Are The Main Types Of Firewood?
It is important to know the different types of Firewood no matter if you’re buying or burning! Knowing the distinctions in wood types can help maximise your wood burning time and even save you trouble when it comes preparing your fire.
Hardwood – Majority of hardwood trees are slow growing. This makes them a lot denser than softwoods. Hardwoods are typically darker in colour, burn more slowly than softwoods and are ideal for cooking. Because of its density hardwoods create fires that produce a lot more heat and therefore is perfect Firewood. Common types of hardwoods include oak, birch and ash.
Softwood – As mentioned above, softwoods are lighter and lower in density than hardwoods. Although they ignite faster than hardwoods, they emit more smoke which isn’t ideal for home fires or cooking. Softwood is typically better used as Firewood for outdoor fires. Common types of softwood include cedar, pine and larch.
